Why do things hurt more in the cold? – and what to do about it!

The colder weather has certainly started to set in over the past week or so; and with the summer we’ve had, the recent weather has come as a shock to most! – it has certainly lead to an increase in the number of people suffering with muscular and joint aches we have been seeing in the clinic of late.

As the shorter days and darker nights draw in, you may well have started to notice yourself that things just seem to feel like they ache more in the chillier weather (particularly those old injuries). But you’ll be glad to know that it might not all just be in your head and that there may indeed be several scientific reasons to explain why you are feeling this way.

Could Joining Your Local Parkrun Make You Happier and Improve Your Lifestyle?

Here at The Injury Clinic we’re great believers in the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and are always helping people who want to lead a more active, independent lifestyle, free of pain. However; for some of our clients the thought of stepping foot in a gym or having to join an exercise class can be off putting.

If you can relate and have been looking for a way to keep active and meet others (without the need for a gym membership); it might be time to dig out those trainers and head down to Welland Park!

Should I use ICE or HEAT?

Avoid this common mistake that could significantly affect your recovery and pain levels!

One of the questions I most frequently get asked by many clients in the clinic is “Should I use ICE or HEAT for my pain?”

Using the wrong type of treatment at the wrong time can have a significant affect on the speed of your recovery.  Avoid making this common mistake in your recovery by following these simple guidelines that we use with our clients.

I tell our clients that whether you use ICE or HEAT depends largely on whether your injury/pain is new or longstanding.Read More

To Google or NOT to Google

The Internet has become a major part of everyday life for most of us, with some arguing that wifi be added to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Basic Human Needs!

There is no doubt that the ability to have the answer to any question at your finger tips has many benefits. We’re all guilty of looking up the odd pub quiz answer or trying to settle a debate with a partner via Google; BUT when it comes to your health sometimes this can be the wrong thing to do.

Whilst I encourage clients to be better informed and understand the causes of their pain and stiffness, the shear volume of information on the internet can be misleading and sources under-qualified or unreliable; leading many clients coming to the clinic having tried remedies and exercises that weren’t correct for their type of injury – wasting valuable time and often money in the process and in some cases even making their injury worse!Read More
