Shockwave therapy FAQs
What’s different about The Injury Clinic Shockwave approach?
As early adopters of shockwave therapy for several years now, we know what works (and more importantly what doesn’t) when it comes to using shockwave therapy in your treatment.
As fantastic a treatment as shockwave therapy is, for long lasting results, we know it’s only as good as the exercise programme that runs alongside it! As exercise rehabilitation specialists we’re well placed to give you the right exercise at the right stage to help you get the most out of your recovery.
Their are many cheaper shockwave machine options on the market today. To ensure we are only ever offering you the best, we only use equipment and training from the industry’s leading provider.Â
With all this in mind – you can be assured that you are receiving the best care with The Injury Clinic approach.
What should I expect?
Initial ConsultationÂ
Your journey begins with an in-depth consultation to assess your condition and determine if shockwave therapy is right for you and your condition. Our specialists will then create a personalised treatment plan to address your specific needs (this will include no. of treatments and required frequency).Â
Treatment Sessions
Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes and to begin with is performed on a weekly basis. During the treatment, you’ll feel rapid pulses of energy (not unlike being flicked with an elastic band) applied to the area. While some clients find this mildly uncomfortable, the intensity can be adjusted to suit your comfort level.
Post-Treatment
Mild swelling or redness at the treatment site is normal and temporary. Some patients may experience a brief increase in symptoms, which is part of the healing process.
Many clients experience an improvement in symptoms almost immediately while others can take several weeks to start feeling the benefit.
How effective is Shockwave Therapy?
For the right conditions at the right stage of your recovery, shockwave therapy is highly effective.Â
Studies have shown success rates of between 70-95% for a range of conditions, leading to Shockwave therapy being recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinic Excellence (NICE) and used as a safe alternative to steroid injections and surgery for many longstanding and difficult to heal injuries.
How many Shockwave treatments will I need?
We find that clients achieve the most successful long term results following a course of 6 shockwave therapy treatments.
This is a prescriptive approach and as such is offered as a package.
It’s important to note that the exercise rehabilitation component of your plan of care also plays a vital role in the long term results you can expect in your recovery. This aspect of your care will typically be required to be continued after your shockwave course for best results.
Can I have Shockwave Therapy on multiple areas?
Yes – for those experiencing symptoms in another area (e.g. both achilles) that is also suitable for shockwave therapy, we offer an extended additional area shockwave package too.
Please feel free to ask a member of our team about this.
What are the contraindications?
Shockwave therapy is not suitable during pregnancy or for individuals with:
- Blood clotting disorders
- Taking anti-platelet medication (such as aspirin, clopidogrel etc.) or anticoagulants (such as warfarin, rivaroxaban etc.)
- Infection of the affected area
- Bone cancer
- Cardiac pacemakers or implanted devices
- History of tendon / ligament rupture
- Steroid injection in past 12 weeks
Your safety is our priority and all potential risks will be discussed during your consultation before commencing treatment.Â
Are there any side effects?
Shockwave therapy is a safe treatment; you may notice some redness, mild swelling or numbness of the treated area and in a few cases, a brief increase in symptoms can be felt following treatment. This should resolve in a few hours/days. In rare circumstances there is a small risk of tendon or ligament rupture.Â
How should I prepare?
It is important that you refrain from taking any anti-inflammatory medications prior to commencing your course of treatment and refrain from any activities that aggravate your symptoms on the day of your treatment.
