What is Sports Massage therapy?

Sports massage or deep tissue massage, is a specialised form of massage therapy designed to reduce stress, relieve muscle tension, support performance and wellbeing, aid recovery and prevent injury.

By focusing on specific areas of muscle tightness or discomfort, sports massage combines firm pressure with various hands on techniques to target areas of tension, soreness and restriction; helping to support a healthy active lifestyle.

Sports Massage FAQs

What's the difference between Sports Massage and regular massage?

Both have a place and purpose in your wellbeing.

Regular massage (think spa or beauty) is a more general form of massage, designed for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Sports massage, in contrast, is a targeted focussed treatment designed primarily to relieve deep muscle tension, improve flexibility, promote recovery and prevent injury. It often uses deeper pressure and specialised techniques.

When is it best to have a Sports Massage?

Many of our clients use sports massage to support a busy or active lifestyle or before and after a sporting event to aid recovery. Whilst others will use sports massage to promote overall wellbeing and maintain health.

How often should I have a Sports Massage?

The timing of your sports massage treatments depends on your goal.

For those with a busy, active schedule we recommend supplementing regular sports massages every 2-4 weeks.

For those with more sedentary jobs we recommend that you’ll benefit from receiving a massage every 4-8 weeks.

Your practitioner will be able to advise when is most suitable for you.

What should I expect from Sports Massage treatments?

When you book a sports massage at The Injury Clinic, you can expect a fully personalised experience. Here’s what happens:

Assessment: Your therapist will discuss your reason for treatment, identify areas of tension and assess any discomfort you might have.

Tailored approach: The massage pressure will be adjusted to your comfort level, ensuring an effective and relaxing – the way you like it.

Techniques: Your treatment may include deep pressure, myofascial release, trigger point therapy and stretching to release tension, relieve tightness and restore flexibility.

Timings: We offer both 45 and 60 min massage therapy sessions, depending on the number of areas you would like focused on.

Specific injury or exercise advice cannot be given during your massage session and where appropriate a consultation appointment may be advised to better cater for your needs where this applies.

Does Sports Massage hurt?

Whilst being a firmer and deeper form of massage, despite common belief, a sports massage does NOT have to hurt to be effective. In fact, a painful massage can have the opposite effect and cause muscles to tighten and ‘guard’.

Your therapist will tailor the depth of your massage to your preference and treatment goal for best results.

Can anyone have Sports Massage?

Whilst most people can benefit from sports massage treatment, there are several health conditions that may mean sports massage is not the most suitable treatment for you. In this case an alternative treatment may need to be recommended to better suit your needs.

It is important to let your practitioner know if you have:

  • Recent fractures or acute injuries.
  • Open wounds or skin infection in the area.
  • Severe bruising or swelling.
  • DVT or blood clotting disorders.
  • Fever or contagious illness.
  • Severe osteoporosis.
  • Cancer, especially if undergoing treatment.
  • Certain medical conditions that may be aggravated by massage such as rheumatoid arthritis or severe hypertension.
  • Pregnancy, especially during the 1st trimester.
  • Allergy or sensitivity to topical products.
What can I expect after Sports Massage?

It’s common to feel some temporary soreness in the area(s) worked. This should resolve within a few hours/days. To get the most out of your sports massage it’s important to:

  • Drink fluids to help your body to rehydrate and promote recovery.
  • Avoid strenuous activity for the remainder of the day.
  • Keep moving to maintain flexibility and prevent muscle stiffness.
  • Book regular sports massage sessions to maintain the benefits and address any ongoing issues or concerns.
