What is the best ankle support?
There are many different ankle supports out there on the market all designed for a different purpose and type of ankle issue. In our experience the best place to start would be with a ‘sock’ or compression type ankle support to reduce swelling and provide support I the early stages.
In truth though, the best support for your ankle pain is building back up your body’s own internal support system through effective rehabilitation of the ligament, muscle, tendon and balance structures around the ankle.
When should I seek treatment for ankle pain?
Early ankle treatment can significantly speed up your ankle recovery, prevent long term issues and reduce the impact ankle injures can have on other areas of your body such as your knees, hips and back.
If you’ve suffered trauma such as twisting or rolling your ankle or are experiencing severe ankle pain, reoccurring ankle symptoms or feelings of ‘giving way’ – it’s time to get some help.
What are the different grades of ankle sprain?
There are 3 grades of ankle sprain based on the severity of the injury, amount of damage and subsequent symptoms.
Grade 1 (mild) ankle sprain:
- Slight stretching or micro tearing of the ligament
- Mild swelling, tenderness and stiffness
- The ankle remains stable and walking is still possible though may be uncomfortable.
Grade 2 (moderate) ankle sprain:
- Partial ligament damage / tearing, possible injury to other ankle structures.
- Moderate bruising, pain and swelling.
- Mild to moderate ankle weakness and instability and difficulty walking.
Grade 3 (severe) ankle sprain:
- Complete tear or rupture of the ligament, almost certain injury to other ankle structures too.
- Significant instability, likely unable to bear weight.
Do I need an ankle x-ray?
The majority of ankle injuries do not require the need for an x-ray; however if you have sustained direct impact or severe trauma to your ankle you may want to seek an x-ray to rule out any potential for fracture or ankle breaks.
What are the best exercises for ankle pain?
Early non-weight bearing movement of the foot and ankle is usually a good place to start with most ankle injuries. This helps prevent the ankle stiffening up and maintains ankle mobility and function.
Beyond this it is important that you seek advice from a trained medical professional who can diagnose your ankle pain and give you appropriate treatment and exercises for your specific issue as doing the wrong exercises can in fact slow down or affect your longterm recovery.
Our team are trained to ensure that the exercises you receive are safe, achievable and appropriate throughout your recovery journey. We also have an onsite rehabilitation gym to support you back to full activity.
What are the best exercises for foot pain?
Examples of good early stage exercises to help relieve foot pain include stretching of the calf and toes, foot dooming and heel raises to strengthen your feet.
It’s important to remember however that doing the wrong exercises for your foot issue or stage of injury can in fact make symptoms worse and delay healing times.
For best advice, our team here at The Injury Clinic are trained to ensure that the exercises you receive throughout your recovery are safe and effective for your specific issue and needs. We also have an onsite rehabilitation gym to support you back to full activity and sport.
