Foot or heel pain stopping you in your tracks?

If you’re experiencing pain in your arch, heel or foot when stepping out of bed in the morning, feel like you’re stepping on a stone, or experience increased foot pain in the hours following running or exercise – you’re in the right place!

We often take our feet for granted. It’s not until foot pain strikes and makes even simple tasks like walking, standing or getting from A to B difficult that we realise how much stress our feet take and how limiting living with foot pain can be.

That’s where we come in.

At The Injury Clinic we specialise in providing high-quality treatment and rehabilitation to help you overcome foot, arch or heel pain. We don’t just treat your symptoms, we work to prevent future issues so you can keep on the go and pain-free!

Symptoms of Foot Pain

Depending on the cause and location of your foot pain, symptoms can vary but may include:

  • Sharp or dull aching in the arch, heel or ball of the foot, particularly when standing or walking.
  • Morning pain that improves when you get moving but returns later in the day.
  • Swelling or inflammation in the foot or heel.
  • Difficulty walking or standing for long periods.
  • A feeling of something being in your shoe or sock, like stepping on a stone.
  • Burning, numbness or tingling sensations in the foot or toes

If you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms – don’t ignore them.

Who We Can Help

Most of the people we see here at the clinic suffering with foot pain find that their symptoms have developed without any specific incident or known cause. Examples of people we regularly help include:

  • Runners and Triathletes: Struggling with foot and Achilles pain or niggles, having recently increased their mileage and training load in preparation for an event.
  • Walkers: Who are struggling with heel and arch pain that is starting to affect their ability to keep up or walk as far.
  • Busy ‘on the go’ individuals: Those suffering with foot pain in the morning or after periods of sitting that is stopping them from getting about as easily and doing the things they need to do with ease.
  • Seniors: Dealing with arthritis or joint-related foot or toe issues, providing gentle and effective treatment to reduce symptoms and maintain balance.
  • Anyone with chronic foot pain: If foot pain has become a regular part of your life, we’re here to provide lasting relief and management.

We won’t promise to be able to help every type of foot pain but if you’re fed up with trying various insoles, foot stretches, and continuously rolling on a spiky ball with very little relief, we’re confident that we have the right treatment to make a real difference to your foot pain and keep you on the go.

What to do next

If left untreated, issues in the foot can not only get worse but can also have a significant impact on how you walk and distribute your weight, leading to compensations and potential injuries in other areas of the body such as your knees, hips and lower back.

Causes of Foot Pain

Foot pain can affect different areas of the foot, including the arch, heel, ball of the foot and toes. Common factors contributing to this include:

  • Heavier body weight
  • Wearing unsupportive or poor fitting footwear/shoes
  • Walking barefoot, especially on hard surfaces

Common causes of foot, arch or heel pain we see here in the clinic are:

  • Plantar fasciitis (pain in the arch of the foot)
  • Plantar heel pain (pain under the heel)
  • Achilles tendonitis or tendinopathy
  • Morton’s neuroma and metatarsalgia (pain in the ball of the foot
  • Bursitis
  • Heel spurs

Foot Pain FAQs

What does foot pain treatment involve?

Our foot treatment starts with a detailed assessment to pinpoint the cause of your arch, heel or foot pain. From there our team will then provide a personalised tailored treatment and exercise plan of care that may consist of hands-on manual therapy, ultrasound treatment, support tapping and rehabilitation exercises to improve mobility, strength and balance of your foot.

Where appropriate for your condition, you may also be offered our revolutionary shockwave therapy service as an alternative treatment plan.

Our approach is designed to relieve your foot pain and prevent it from returning or affecting other areas of your body.

Why does my foot hurt in the morning?

This is a common question we regularly get asked by those who come to us with foot pain. Morning pain (especially if it eases after a few steps or minutes) is a common symptom of foot issues such as plantar fasciitis or tendinopathy.

These symptoms can also be felt after sitting for a period of time. This is because the affected tissues in your foot tighten whilst you sleep or rest, causing sharp pain when they are stretched again as you take your first few steps.

This is also the reason you may find that your foot doesn’t hurt with exercise or running but returns again once you’ve rested it.

There are several treatments that we offer that can help by stretching and strengthening the affected area, resulting in healthier tissue and providing lasting relief.

When should I seek treatment for foot pain?

If left untreated, foot pain can become stubborn and may even start to cause issues or pain in other areas of your body such as your knees, hips and back due to changing the way you walk.

If your pain has persisted for more than a week, is starting to impact your daily activities and sport or has worsened overtime – it’s time to ask for help and seek effective assessment and treatment.

What are the best shoes to wear for foot pain?

Wearing the right footwear plays a crucial role in managing and preventing foot, arch and heel pain. As a rule of thumb, when deciding what shoes to wear, look for shoes with:

  • Good arch support
  • Cushioning to reduce impact through the foot
  • Proper fit (not too loose or too tight)

Occasionally you may also benefit from the use of an orthotic (insole) or other support to take pressure off your foot.

At The Injury Clinic, we’ll help you find the right footwear or orthotic for your specific foot type and issue based on your needs.

Do I need an insole for foot pain?

As discussed above, in some cases the temporary use of an insole or other support in your shoes can be beneficial to take unwanted pressure off of your affected foot.

It can be a minefield to know which type of insole is suitable for your particular foot condition or if you even need one! Before spending money on off-the-shelf or custom insoles, seek the advice of our Injury Clinic team, who can advise on your suitability.

What are the best exercises for foot pain?

Examples of good early stage exercises to help relieve foot pain include stretching of the calf and toes, foot dooming and heel raises to strengthen your feet.

It’s important to remember however that doing the wrong exercises for your foot issue or stage of injury can in fact make symptoms worse and delay healing times.

For best advice, our team here at The Injury Clinic are trained to ensure that the exercises you receive throughout your recovery are safe and effective for your specific issue and needs. We also have an onsite rehabilitation gym to support you back to full activity and sport.
