Symptoms of Shoulder Pain
Whether your issue has built up over time or is a more recent pain; shoulder pain can manifest in a number of ways, including:
- Dull ache or sharp, shooting pain in the joint, shoulder blade or upper arm.
- Limited range of movement or stiffness, especially when waking up or after resting.
- Loss of strength or weakness in the shoulder or arm.
- Swelling, inflammation or heat around the joint.
- Pain that worsens with movement, particularly when reaching or lifting.
If these symptoms sound familiar – Don’t ignore them!
If left untreated, shoulder pain can often worsen overtime and even start to cause issues in other areas of the body such as your neck and upper back.

Why does my shoulder click?
Clicking in the shoulder is natural and can be the result of a muscle, tendon or ligament moving or ‘flicking’ over bony parts of the shoulder or the presence of air or fluid inside the joint. This is usually nothing to be concerned about; however painful or persistent ‘clicking’ or ‘clunking’ should always be assessed and evaluated.
How do I know if my shoulder pain is severe?
The majority of shoulder issues are not severe, however; if you’re experiencing constant or intense pain that significantly affects your ability to move or use the arm, causes you to constantly wake at night or impairs daily tasks, your condition may be more severe. Severe shoulder issues may also be accompanied by numbness, tingling or weakness in the affect arm and require prompt attention.
When should I seek treatment for shoulder pain?
The truth is, most people ‘put up with’ shoulder pain for much longer than they need to before seeking treatment.Â
Recovery for shoulder injuries can take several months. If you have been experiencing your shoulder symptoms for more than a week (without improvement), have reoccurring symptoms or are experience high levels of pain and discomfort, it’s crucial to seek advice early and gain an understanding of what is going on to further guide your recovery.
What are the best exercises for shoulder pain?
Exercise should form an essential part of your shoulder treatment to improve mobility and increase strength and stability in the shoulder for a full recovery.Â
Doing the wrong exercises or at the wrong stage of your recovery however, can actually make your shoulder pain worse and even slow down your recovery time. Tempting as it may be, it’s important that you don’t ‘try’ any shoulder exercises you’ve seen and avoid aggravating movements and activities until you’ve been assessed by a medical professional.
Our team are trained to ensure that the exercises you receive are safe, achievable and appropriate throughout your recovery journey. We also have an onsite rehabilitation gym to support you back to full activity.
