Acupuncture FAQs
What should I expect from Acupuncture treatment?
Following an initial consultation and assessment to determine the suitability of medical acupuncture for your condition, the process and considerations will be explained to you before treatment is agreed and commenced.
During treatment, single use, sterile needles are inserted into the area either at the sites where you feel pain, away from the pain or a combination of both. The needles are usually left in for as little as a few minutes to 30 mins.
Throughout the treatment, your practitioner may stimulate the needle’s response by gently pulsing them back and forth at regular intervals.
Does Acupuncture hurt?
No – the needles used are approximately the width of a human hair and should not cause pain.Â
As the needles are inserted, you may feel a slight sharp pricking sensation or ‘twitch’ in the muscle. You may also have the feeling of warmth or heaviness in the area during treatment.Â
It should not feel unpleasant and alternatively you may not feel the needles at all.
How many Acupuncture treatment sessions will I need?
The overall number of treatment sessions required will depend on you, your condition and your practitioner’s assessment. The frequency of treatments will be guided by how you respond to the treatment.
It is generally clear after around 4 treatment sessions whether or not acupuncture will benefit you and if treatment should be continued or an alternative approach sort.Â
Your practitioner will guide you on this at all times.
Can anyone have Acupuncture?
Whilst most people can benefit from acupuncture, there are several health conditions that may prevent you from receiving acupuncture or mean that the treatment should be used with caution.Â
It is important to let your practitioner know if you:
- Are taking anti-platelet medication (such as aspirin or clopidogrel etc.) or anticoagulants (such as warfarin or rivaroxaban etc.)
- Have a bleeding disorder e.g. Haemophilia.
- Have a history of fitting or seizures.Â
- Have an active infection or risk of infection.
- Are pregnant or trying to conceive.Â
- Have a cardiac pacemaker or implanted device.
- Have a known allergy to metals.
- Have a needle phobia.
- Have a deficient or weakened immune system.
- Have low blood pressure.
- Have altered sensation in the treatment area.
If you intend to regularly give blood then please notify your practitioner prior to receiving acupuncture treatment.
Are there any side effects from Acupuncture?
Following treatment, side effects, if any, tend to be mild and short-lived. These may include mild ‘spotting’ bleeding, bruising, mild discomfort / increased symptoms, drowsiness or tiredness.Â
If you have, or are concerned about any possible side effects, please speak to your practitioner.
How should I prepare for Acupuncture treatment?
You should aim to eat in the 2 hours before your treatment to help maintain your blood sugar levels. To get the most out of your treatment, plan your activity around your appointment. Try to avoid strenuous or stimulating activities close to your treatment time.
Remember to wear loose fitting clothing around the area to be treated and bring a bottle of water to hydrate after treatment.
